Parkdale—High Park New Democrats are pleased to see the Ontario Commission for the federal boundary redistribution agree with hundreds of community members—that Parkdale needs to stay in the name of the riding.
Community action sees "Parkdale" stay in riding name
The Commission’s initial recommendation to change the name of the riding to Taiaiako’n—High Park raised concerns about the omission of Parkdale from the name. Parkdale has been recognized in the name of a riding since 1914.
Hundreds of community members signed petitions and wrote to the Commission praising their recommendation to honour Taiaiako’n, which was a Haudenosaunee village on the eastern shores of the Humber River, but encouraging them to also keep Parkdale in the riding’s name.
MPP Bhutila Karpoche and representatives from the Parkdale—High Park New Democrats made deputations at the public hearings and submitted thorough reports with the recommendation that the name be Taiaiako’n—Parkdale—High Park.
“We are proud of the history of our community, which includes both Taiaiako’n and Parkdale,” said Karpoche. “I am pleased the Commission agreed with our neighbours and kept Parkdale in our name.”
The Commission’s recommendations now go to Parliament to hear any objections from MPs. The Commission will then present its final report, with finalized changes to take effect for the first federal election held after April 2024.
