QUEEN’S PARK — Bhutila Karpoche, NDP MPP for Parkdale—High Park, released the following statement in response to the federal government’s announcement regarding legal aid:
Ford’s cuts to legal aid will continue to hurt vulnerable people
“Despite today’s announcement, Doug Ford’s callous cuts to legal aid will continue to hurt vulnerable people. Ford’s cuts will force thousands of vulnerable people across the province to go without legal representation — people like single parents seeking child support and tenants fighting bad landlords.
It took the federal government so long to step in to support immigrants and refugees, closing just one of the many holes Ford’s callous cuts have created in the safety net provided by legal aid.
Vulnerable people in Ontario deserve so much better. That’s why the NDP continues to call on the Conservatives to fully restore legal aid funding, including funding to community legal clinics.”
